The secret to success is “maintaining a relentless focus on impact rather than accolades,” says Catharine Montgomery, founder and CEO of Better Together, a communications agency that galvanizes positive change for purpose-driven organizations. Her goal is to help make a positive impact in the lives of others. “This purpose-driven approach ensures that my work is always meaningful and aligns with my deeper values, which fuels my passion and dedication in all my endeavors.”

Montgomery launched Better Together to provide creative strategies, messaging and branding to organizations that align with her values, which she describes this way: The vision for Better Together is to build a more just, environmentally sustainable world centered around human and labor rights, access to education, and healthcare for all through collaborative and creative communication campaigns.

Catharine is a seasoned DC-based communications expert with deep expertise in education, environment and social justice issues. She founded Better Together after a successful career working at communications agencies on campaigns that have helped bring about social change.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would tell my younger self to embrace every challenge as an opportunity to grow. The journey is often unpredictable and sometimes tough, but every experience, whether good or bad, shapes who you become. Trust in your own abilities, stay true to your values, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Most importantly, remember that patience and persistence pave the path to success.

You inspire women through your leadership and fearlessness. Who was your inspiration and why?

My inspiration comes from the collective strength of the many resilient women who came before me. Black women like Maya Angelou, who taught us the power of rising despite the odds, and the personal mentors in my life who embodied courage and tenacity. These women showed me that leadership is not just about guiding others but also about lifting them as you climb. Their examples taught me to lead with both boldness and kindness.

What advice do you give to Help Others Get Started ON THEIR JOURNEY, or who says, “I could never do that”?

To anyone doubting their capability, I say: “You are stronger than you think.” The first step is always the hardest. Begin with small, manageable goals and gradually push your boundaries. Remember, every expert was once a beginner. Believing in yourself is key, and surround yourself with a supportive network that encourages your growth. You are capable of amazing things — start today.

How do you stay motivated to keep going once you’ve met your goals?

Staying motivated for me comes from setting new challenges and continuously raising the bar. Success is not a final destination but a continuous journey. I thrive on learning and growth, which means there’s always a new skill to master, a new idea to explore, or a new venture to begin. This mindset keeps me energized and excited about the future, ensuring I never feel complacent.

Do you have a mantra or words you live by that have helped you through tough times and kept you going?

One of my guiding quotes is by Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” This reminds me that the path to significant achievements is often littered with doubts and setbacks, but perseverance and faith can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Whenever I face obstacles, I recall these words to reinforce my resolve.

Anything else we haven’t already asked—your secret to success or advice/tips you love to share with others?

I measure success by the difference I make in the lives of others and the positive changes I can bring to my community.çThis purpose-driven approach ensures that my work is always meaningful and aligns with my deeper values, which fuels my passion and dedication in all my endeavors.
